Fort Macon State Park

Nestled at the end of Bogue Banks, just over the bridge and down the road from Atlantic Beach, we found ourselves at Fort Macon. Once home to a Civil War Battle, as well as housing for troops during World War Two, Fort Macon has been around for a long time, and still stands complete and undisturbed. The rooms are set up, depicting different times in history -- mess halls, kitchens, ammo supply, and barracks quarters. The grounds are well kept, and the views are quite scenic. We picked the perfect day to walk across from the beach and take a look around -- the sun was shining, the breeze was light, and there was plenty of room for the kids to run free. We walked, we saw, we climbed on and we enjoyed all that the park had to offer. And we can say that it's definitely somewhere we will go back to -- maybe next time, we'll pack a picnic and sit down on the lawn, surrounded by cannons of days gone by, and take in the history over soda and sandwiches!
