How We Fill Our Time

The other day, a friend made the comment on Facebook that when, and if, she ever decides to have children, she is going to come to me for ideas of what to do with them.

You know ... for entertainment.

I had to laugh a little bit.

This isn't the first time someone has said this to me. And I don't say that to toot my own horn. It actually surprises me. Because in my eyes, we don't really do a whole lot.

Sure, we have picnic lunches in the backyard. And go for walks down our dead-end street in the wagon. We run under the sprinkler. Sometimes the kids help me cook or bake. Occasionally I have a craft project or coloring page for them to do, coordinated with a holiday or event coming up.

And yes, we go to story time at the library, and run errands to town: the post office, grocery store, or dollar store.

But I see so many moms out there that are doing so much more -- learning activities, music time and lessons, crafts and art projects, outside play, playgroups and play-dates, movies in the park. As much as I would love to do a lot of those things with our kids, right now, the area we are living in just doesn't have much of that available.

So I make do.

And the kids? They don't know any different. They don't see what other kids 100 miles away are doing every day, so they don't feel like they are missing out on anything.

Sometimes, its the low-key moments that pack the most fun. Like trying, with all their might, to push over the large red balls at Target. {Which, yes, happens every time we go to the store!} And I wouldn't have it any other way!
